Just to add to it a little... As stated, avoid buying anything at low levels. Quested gear will be better for you since you will very quickly outgrow anything you purchase. Then you are stuck vendoring it back for a silver or 2. 
 
Also as for the gathering professions, YES!!! I mad my hunter an explorer. At level 45, I can go through many areas and gather up to dwarf-iron ore and not aggro mobs. In about 2 hours of gathering, I can smelt enough westernesse steel to creat a full stack. On Landroval, I can almost always get a minimum of 2 gold for a stack. For 2 hours worth of work, it will pay off. Also note, stacks of ore sell better than ingots. Since 'most' people will buy the ore to skill themselves up in crafting without having to do the grunt work. Once you get into higher level ores/ingots, I personally feel the ingots smelted with coal to create steel sells far better than ore/ingots alone. Good luck!
